How frequently do people like you find a tomb lying marooned on the side of a busy road with people hanging clothes on the boundary wall of the museum, probably none right? But its not in the case with the Bijri Khan’s Tomb at R.K Puram Sector III. The Lodi era monument lies amidst the disarray the metro city, with slums trespass the sides of the museum. The monument is moderate near to its former glory. Today, after a long period of time of restoration has ensured that the monument will survive another decade or so, but the unknown past of its origin and less tourist attraction means the monument is still not recognized on crucial destinations in Delhi list. Trusted that the monument is more than 600 years, the monument was declared to be of prime archaeological importance before the INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) started to renovate the tomb. The reports prior to restoration says that people were residing inside the monuments and the graves inside the monument were in very poor condition. The walls had started to decay and erode and immediate attention was needed on it. Today, one can befall the monument easily and it has started to gain some footfall but it still has a long way to go to be a recognised monument in Delhi.

HISTORY OF THE ATTRACTION

Birth of the monument is still not sure, with past historians claiming that the tomb was constructed during Lodi Era because of its symbolic architecture. Although, not much is known about the man himself. The monument was originally noticed by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage,  Bijri Khan is said to a be a nobleman in Lodi court and the tomb was in remembrance of Bijri Khan. In the year 2004 concluded that the monument should be categorised as an A Level monument because of its archaeological importance. A very big challenge was during restoration was the illegal encroachment within the tomb premise, That had to be removed first. The restoring process, though, began after a legal settlement. Today, the monument is open to public and the visitors board is trying to promote such unknown monuments in Delhi.

GETTING THERE

The nearest metro station to get is AIIMS on Yellow Line of Delhi Metro. From there you just need to take an auto to reach R.K Puram Sector III.

The tomb is open from monday to saturday between 11 am to 5 pm except sunday.
