2664

It is a two feet six inches or a seven hundred and sixty-two-millimetre narrow-gauge railway in North India which crosses a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is recognised for breathtaking views of the hills and surrounding villages.  The railway was constructed under the administration of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj period.  Its early locomotives were produced by Sharp, Stewart and Company. Larger locomotives were included, which were manufactured by the Hunslet Engine Company. Diesel and diesel-hydraulic locomotives commenced operation in 1955 and 1970, respectively. Kalka-Shimla railway was listed under UNESCO mountain railways of India World Heritage Site on 8th of July, 2008.
