Located in Naggar, within the bases of the Roerich estate, Uruswati Himalayan Folk Art Museum is just 100 m upward from the Nicholas K. Roerich Art Gallery.  Professor and Madame Nicholas Roerich established it in the early 19th century, as the Research Institute of Naggar. The purpose behind the foundation of this tribal and folk art museum was to render a place of study and research on the traditional Indian and Tibetan medicines and the history and the essence of the Himalayan terrain. The museum got its existing name in the late 1990's. The word 'Uruswati' in Sanskrit means 'Light of the Morning Star'. The main attractions of the Uruswati Himalayan Folk Art Museum are Russian culture and folk art, rich costumes, unique paintings of Roerich and those of his Russian followers.
